John Butterworth
John is an Australian digital industry veteran with 25 years’ experience in management, strategy, policy, and regulation.
In his prior role as the long-serving CEO of AIMIA, Australia’s digital industry association, and as one of the founding directors of the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) in Australia, John has a broad range of experience in industry development and government policy and regulation, with a particular focus on consumer privacy, data governance, and online safety.
Originally operating in the digital media and advertising sector, John has worked extensively in search engine marketing, ad serving and with various ad-tech platforms, and was an early proponent of using consumer and end-user data to target and personalise online advertising and content.
Most recently, John has been working in senior strategy roles for a range of Australian digital agencies, delivering a broad suite of digital, tech, and policy-related strategy services for clients including Seven West Media, NRMA Motoring, Frasers Property, Sydney Olympic Park, HSBC, Red Energy, Zurich, The SCG/SFS, NSW Dept Planning & Environment, Westpac, Huawei, and Rio Tinto.
